A Personal Note from Jan
I've always enjoyed time in the wilderness. Unfortunately, I always felt compelled to photograph what I saw. This dichotomy forced me to miss a lot of the 'zen' in nature, since my energy was always focused on shooting. For a period of time, I laid my camera down and observed the world more closely, taking mental pictures of what I saw. I feel this period allowed me to mature artistically and prepared me for what I am doing today.
Now I trek to the wilderness to capture scenes of remote, natural locations, and at the same time enjoy being 'at one' with my surroundings. While a majority of my work originates from these places, other images derive from contemporary urban centers. It's this man-made world of the city that presents a colorful, highly designed environment that I use as a basis for my other work.
What I see through my viewfinder is the same world that we all see; although I attempt to capture an intimate view of my subjects; one that is typically overlooked from living a hectic lifestyle.
I present my images as organized, designed space. Color lures me; light creates the "mood" in each print. I invite you to look closely at what each print has to offer -- experience the color, the shapes, the light and the intimate views that makes each image unique.
