Canton Luminaries Selected Entries
Images chosen for the 2010 Showcase

What could I have done to improve my entries?
This is a common and understandable question. First of all, congratulations for taking the initiative to submit your work, that's often the hardest thing to do. Some common problems that held images back from being selected were image quality, basic composition errors, and editing mistakes. For specific questions and advice you may consider bringing, or sending, your work in for review. Luminaries entrants will receive 25% off their portfolio reviews when scheduled before June 26th.
To get even more out of your images you may want to look at a masterproofing session for your stronger images. In a masterproofing session we will take your native file and process it through a professional workflow all the way to print. You will then have up to 5 proofs to correct and change to arrive at your masterproof. This masterproof will then be kept on file here at the Saxton Gallery to be printed whenever you need a copy.
The Selection Process
This was an excruciatingly difficult selection. MANY strong entries did not make it through the review, a regrettable element of the selection process. Unfortunately we were tasked with selecting only 100 pieces from over 700 entries. What the judges liked to see was creative processing, tack sharp focus or deliberate selective focus, and compelling compositions. We were looking for edge to edge quality and all aspects of the print presentation were fair game.
Some of the most common reasons pieces were passed over were basic editing mistakes, weakness in their category, and poor use of focus.
All decisions are final and no appeals will be considered. Please do not write or call about the selections. No refunds will be given for pieces not selected for the competition.
Pick Ups and Returns
Please note the date for entry pick ups has changed. Entries may now be picked up from June 11 - July 10.
Works may be returned to the photographers at their expense. Returns will be sent via USPS parcel post at a rate of $8.99 per 5 entries (depending on thickness). To request your prints be returned to you please download our return form and submit this to us prior to July 10. Return forms sent in after July 10th will be discarded. Your entries may take up to 10 weeks to be returned. Forms may be faxed to 330.456.9566 or e-mailed to the address at the bottom of your screen.
Entries not picked up or filed for return by July 10 will become property of the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography and may be sold, exhibited, or discarded at their discretion.

PUBLIC JUDGING FROM 6-10P FRIDAY JUNE 4TH!
2010 Honoree: John VanAbel
Below are the entries selected for the 2010 Canton Luminaries Photography Showcase. Congratulations to the 140 photographers who were brave enough to submit their work. Unfortunately, we are only able to display 100 pieces, and with nearly 800 entries less than 13% of entries were selected for the showcase. Our task, to eliminate all but the strongest entries, was an impossibly difficult and uneviable one. However, we feel we have arrived at an outstanding group of prints and we wish all of the selected photographers the best of luck during the upcoming judging.
Please join us Friday, June 4th for the public selection, and don't forget to bring your friends and family! Entries chosen by the public during June's First Friday will win our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes. The grand prize winner will be selected by a hand picked judging panel, well steeped in photo literacy. Our esteemed panel of judges includes: M.J. Albacete, executive director of the Canton Museum of Art, Christine Shearer, executive director of the Massillon Museum of Art, Dan Kane, arts and entertainment editor for the Canton Repository, Robb Hankins, CEO of Arts in Stark, and the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography staff.
If you have any questions about the competition, please see the original page which can be found here.
Please alert us if we have mis-spelled your name!
Special Designee: Mr. Ted J. Davis
(August 24, 1928 - May 22, 2010)
Ted Davis, a beloved member of the Canton Arts District, passed away Saturday May 22nd. We are honored to have had Ted as a friend of the gallery and will be making a special display for Ted's entries. Ted's work is in the collections of several major galleries, museums, and national parks and has been included in his interior designs for clients for over 40 years. Please join us in remembering Mr. Ted J. Davis and his photography.
